Student YMCA

Student YMCA Overview

Student Y is a student-run school (or community) based organization for middle and high school students (Grades 6-12) that promotes youth development, social responsibility, and healthy living through civic engagement, service-learning, and leadership development.

Chapter members achieve greater understanding of local and global public service and policy, build relationships through service with peers, educators, mentors, and service partners, and develop a culture of belonging in their chapters, schools, communities, Commonwealth, nation, and world.

  • Members – Student Y is for all students who wish to become cause-driven servant leaders in their schools and communities and who uphold the Y’s core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.
  • Affiliation Fees – $10 per Student Y Member
  • Advisor (Age 21+) – Chapters must have an enthusiastic and caring adult advisor, usually a teacher, administrator, or approved parent volunteer.

To become a Student Y Chapter, complete the Chapter Affiliation Process. This includes submitting the Affiliation Form, Chapter Roster, and Affiliation Fees. All chapters, new and existing, must affiliate every fall.

Program Areas

Throughout the year, Student Y Chapter members learn, serve, and lead in the following areas of programming:

  • Chapter Development | Year-round
Our Student Y Chapters can only build stronger communities by developing a strong community and culture within their own membership. Starting this year, this will be facilitated by new resources designed to help chapters create an environment of achievement, belonging, and meaningful relationships.

    • Unveiled at Regional Roundup 2016!
    • Available exclusively to affiliated Student Y Chapters
  • Local Service | Fall
During the fall, chapters emphasize local service as they prepare to attend KYA. To kick-off the year, chapter officers attend Regional Roundup to train and develop their service plans for the year. Our local service partner is Inspire Kentucky, which promotes student voter registration, awareness and turnout.

  • Global Service | Spring
During the spring, chapters emphasize global service as they prepare to attend KUNA. Our global service partner is Waterstep, which collects old and used shoes to help fund global clean water efforts. Chapters celebrate their year of service by attending We Day Kentucky and/or participating in Global Youth Service Day.

  • Service-Learning | Year-round
At the heart of Student Y is a constant commitment to service. We organize year-round service-learning into three levels – chapter, collaborative (multi-chapter), and individual – which collectively represent the overall service of your chapter.
