Service to the South

On this eight-day trip, students will perform service across the southern United States, as well as learn about the area’s rich cultural history with a particular focus on the civil rights struggle.

In the past, service projects have included restoring a historical school in Montgomery, refurbishing a playground in inner-city New Orleans, rebuilding houses for the elderly in Jackson, and demolishing abandoned buildings outside Atlanta.  Cultural experiences have included exploring blues music with local musicians in Memphis, painting murals in Nashville, and exploring the Elvis obsession at Graceland 2.

Each participant pledges to raise at least one thousand dollars prior to the trip.  This money will be used to cover the trip expenses and to support the Kentucky YMCA Youth Association’s Scholarship Fund.  This fundraising is an important component of the trip as it helps to develop valuable skills for anyone seeking to make a difference at a community level.  The Y will provide resources to help students to secure the funds necessary to participate.

In addition to performing service projects and learning about Kentucky’s cultural heritage, students on the Y-Corps Service Trip will learn valuable leadership skills and foster meaningful relationships with their service team mates.  The goal of Y-Corps is to help students learn the value of service to others and continue service as a way of life.
